Green December Day 7 - Phone Cases

I stopped… buying plastic phone cases

What’s the first thing that you do when you upgrade your phone? Buy a screen protector and buy a phone case, I hope. With the nature of my work, I didn’t have a lot of time to waste to get a new case so when I heard about these compostable phone cases, I didn’t hesitate.

These cases made in Canada by Pela are 100% compostable, shock absorbing and slim fitting. I’ve had mine for over a year now, and it has been holding up against lots of accidents.

When you no longer need the case, you can simply put it in the compost (as long as you check that your municipality will accept bioplastics) or you can send it back to Pela to be recycled into more cases and get 20% off your next order.

Why

Thousands of pounds of plastic are produced each year to accommodate new phone models and with every new model that comes out, old, unused versions get thrown out.

Although you can recycle a lot of plastic phone cases, chemicals like BPA, lead, cadmium and phthalates that leech out into the environment. Pela is made of compostable materials that don’t contain any of the above to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the environment.

Upon looking more into their company, Pela often feature special edition cases in partnership with some organizations that they’ve supported. They are also a partner of the 1% for the Planet where they donate a percent of their profits to non-profit environmental organizations!
